PROJECT OVERVIEW

This Major Projects Group project involved the demolition of the API Plant, redundant pipe work and equipment within the CSBP Kwinana works.

SCOPE OF WORK

Demolition consisted of the compressor house, conveyor crane structure, syn loop cooling fans and associated structure, concrete plinths and footings.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES
 Removal of hazardous material

 Excavation work.

Work around live services and a 22000 HV cable.

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

Equipment on site consisted of 2 Boom Lifts, one 35T excavator with rock breaker and bucket, one 65T excavator with grapple attachment and bucket and one Manitou (telescopic handler).

The project involved extensive excavation and removal of contaminated soil from below the pipe rack. The team was then required to back fill and compact to 500mm from ground level. Particular care, such as hand digging was required due to a 22000-volt high voltage cable near by. The work in the vicinity of live services was overseen by CSBP and Downer electrical.

Lifting equipment was used to carefully drag out the drain from below the live services, on completion of this task the remaining section of drain was removed.

The scope required samples to be taken from a 600 cubic metre stockpile of concrete for analysis by CSBP.

RESULTS

The 6 staff on site processed and removed over 1000 tonnes of steel. An estimated 440 tonne of asbestos including asbestos piping in-cased in a concrete culvert approximately 5 metres long 1 metre wide and 800 mm deep, was removed from site, and over 4500 tonnes of concrete.
